Welcome to this introductory course on Heart of Darkness, one of the most complex and discussed works of modern literature. Published by Joseph Conrad at the end of the 19th century, the novel tells Marlow’s journey along the Congo River in search of Kurtz, a commercial agent surrounded by mystery, prestige and horror.
However, this work is not just an adventure story. It is also a disturbing reflection on European imperialism, colonial violence, moral corruption and the fragility of civilizing discourses. As the story progresses, the reader discovers that the “heart of darkness” is not only a geographical place, but also a moral and political image.
In this course we will approach the novel from a critical perspective. We wonder what it reveals about colonial power, how silence works in the text, why Kurtz’s figure is so disturbing, and how important Marlow’s final lie to the Intended is.
